The Big Bend of Texas, a sprawling haven of rugged mountains, vast canyons, and breathtaking desert landscapes, offers far more than just stunning scenery. Nestled within this natural wonderland, a vibrant food truck scene has blossomed, tempting adventurous palates and satisfying hungry hearts. From authentic Salvadoran to smoky BBQ and beyond, these mobile culinary havens cater to every craving, adding an extra dimension of deliciousness to your Big Bend of Texas adventure. You’ll find many food trucks throughout Alpine, Fort Davis, Terlingua, Study Butte, Marfa, and Marathon, but we’ve compiled a short list of some of our favorites
The Munchies Salvadoreños: A Taste of El Salvador
I lived in El Salvador for 3 years in the mid-90s, and this food truck brings back wonderful memories. The Munchies Salvadoreños (or Antojitos del Comal Salvadoreño on Facebook) is a fusion of authentic Salvadoran and Mexican dishes with traditional Pupusas as the star. Pupusas are thick tortillas made from finely ground white corn and stuffed with a variety of fillings. Choose from savory cheese, beans, chicken, and even squash or spinach for an explosion of textures and tastes. Pupusas are served with a side of “curtido” (a mildly spicy slaw made with finely shredded cabbage, red onion, carrot, spices, and vinegar) and tomato sauce.
Don’t miss out on their other wonderful treats, such as huaraches, flautas, empanadas, burritos, street corn, and more.
Munchies Salvadoreños is located in a yellow food truck on State Street, in the middle of Fort Davis. It’s open 5 days a week for lunch and dinner, so pick a spot at one of their tables and order a taste of El Salvador.
Maria’s Comida Mexicana: A Taste of Tradition
No culinary journey through Big Bend is complete without experiencing the warmth and tradition of Maria’s Comida Mexicana. This food truck serves up all the classics of Mexican cuisine, prepared with fresh ingredients and time-honored recipes. From succulent tacos overflowing with flavorful fillings to hearty burritos and Chile Relleno, each dish is a testament to Maria’s passion for her heritage.
It’s hard to choose just one dish, but our favorite is the 3 Enchiladas Montadas with a fried egg and green sauce. This dish consists of 3 flat corn tortillas layered with gooey cheese. It’s topped with a perfectly cooked fried egg and the green sauce is to die for. Spicy and creamy, you just can’t get enough. They can even put together a Family Taco Platter if you’re having a party and looking for delicious food and an “easy button” to push.
Maria’s is in the American Legion parking lot on Avenue E, just before 8th St., in Alpine
Tri La Bite: Everyone will Find a Favorite
There’s a reason why Tri La Bite is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google with over 150 reviews – the options and quality are 1st-class! Start with one of their 6 appetizers, like Crispy Shrimp Wraps or Buffalo Ranch Fries, then try your best to pick an entrée (or better yet, go with friends and order several to share). Tri La Bite offers 9 burgers and 3 chicken options, not to mention wraps and lettuce wraps. And they all include fries OR fried okra with dipping sauce. Vegetarian? Got it. Bring your kid? Got it. They even have a catfish basket that’s complete with hushpuppies and house-made tartar sauce.
Don’t forget to check out Tri La Bite’s Facebook page for daily specials such as Chile Relleno Bacon Cheeseburger, Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich, Cowboy Sandwich, or any number of unique flavors and combinations.
Tri La Bite is located on Holland Avenue in Alpine, in a parking lot next to Twin Peak Liquors on the east side of town.
DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ: Incredible Flavor in Big Bend
Although DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ is now a full restaurant, its roots began as a food truck in 2016 and we felt our list would be incomplete without it.
