Anthony Bourdain said, “Breakfast is a meal with an incredible emotional charge. It’s a feeling of fellowship that is unlike any other meal of the day.”
We completely agree and have been dismayed at how the Art of Breakfast has diminished even to the point that many people don’t realize that the second “B” in “B&B” actually stands for breakfast.
Hotels that include breakfast are pushing the easy button by using premade foods, such as omelets and sausages, that only need to be reheated. Many traditional B&Bs have stopped offering a full breakfast or even foregone breakfast altogether because of the rise in special dietary requirements, such as gluten-free and vegan.
Not at Alpine Bed and Breakfast. Tom and I decided to open Alpine Bed and Breakfast in 2019, and although we didn’t have a complete vision (sometimes we had to make it up as we went), we knew one thing for sure – we were not going to do any of the things I hated during my 30+ years of travel. And that definitely meant that the second “B” in B&B would clearly be for BREAKFAST!
We decided on a few rules: (1) No bulk casseroles. (2) Homemade if at all possible. (3) Nothing that people make every day at home. (4) Lots of choices and variety.
Most importantly, we’d be able to accommodate many dietary requirements so that gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, vegetarian, and keto guests feel just as pampered as those without special diets.
Over time, our menu has increased to include 7 different homemade breads, muffins, and breakfast cookies. Of those, 3 are savory and 4 are sweet. 5 are vegan, including two that are sweet. Two are gluten-free, but we can also add two additional gluten-free breads when needed. If you’ve stayed with us, you’ve most likely eaten some of these specialty breads without even knowing – we dropped the “GF” and “vegan” labels years ago because people weren’t ordering them, and now they’re extremely popular.
Guests can select from up to 8 different sides each day, including baked apple, a meat option, potatoes (or occasionally grits or housemade black beans), homemade yogurt with Texas honey and pecans, fresh fruit, avocado slices, overnight oats, and scrambled eggs (because sometimes you just might want something simple. We understand!). We also make the 4 jams we serve – Strawberry Papaya, Apple Butter, Pineapple Pear, and our newest, Blueberry Peach.
The main specialty dish changes every day and is part of what makes Alpine Bed and Breakfast unique and memorable. Because we have approximately 20 different main dishes, you might be presented with:
- Strawberry Bread Pudding with a Maple Yogurt Topping
- Egg Roulade with Tomatoes, Swiss Cheese, and Sauteed Mushrooms and Onions
- Croissant Sandwich with Turkey Sausage and Scrambled Eggs
- Carrot Cake Baked Oats with Cream Cheese Icing
- Cornbread Hash with Ham, Tomatoes, Kale, Green Onions & a Fried Egg
- Alpine Monty Cristo
- Chorizo Frittata with Tomatoes and Spinach and a side of Refried Black Beans
- Strawberry, Banana & Chocolate French Toast
- Pancake Streusel with a Maple Banana Sauce
- Savory French Toast with Tomatoes, Avocado, Cheese, a Fried Egg & a side of Sriracha Aioli
- House-smoked Salmon with a Bagel and all the Fixins
- And so much more
And don’t forget our guest favorite, Alpine Bacon. We bake thick-cut bacon until it’s halfway cooked, add brown sugar and spices, then finish cooking it until the sugar caramelizes. It’s sweet and spicy and our most requested recipe.
Do your plans include leaving early to hike or explore? We have that covered, too with an early-morning to-go menu. Just let us know 24 hours in advance and your breakfast will be ready and waiting for you in the guest refrigerator before you leave in the morning.
To customize your experience even more, you can choose where you eat. We have tables and chairs throughout the property including the front porch, back porch, yard, and even the firepit, so you can watch the birds and wildlife as they come for a visit while you enjoy your breakfast (or even an afternoon snack). Each room has a table and chairs as well. But most people choose to enjoy the fellowship of the other guests at the dining room table while they share their experiences of the Big Bend of Texas.
